Manitoba gymnast Isabela Onyshko returned from the Rio Olympic Games Friday morning.  A cheering crowd of friends, family and supporters met the 18-year-old Minnedosa native at the Winnipeg Richardson International Airport around 10 a.m. Most of them made the drive from her hometown of Brandon, Manitoba.

Onyshko qualified for two finals at the Rio Games, finishing 8th in the individual balance beam and 9th in the all-around team final. It wasn't the results she wanted, but she’s taking the event as a learning opportunity.

"There were ups and downs but it was a great experience," said Onyshko. "We want to continue to improve, we want to prove we're getting better in Canada and we're a country to watch out for."

In the individual competition, Onyshko fell off the beam but recovered to finish her routine. Her coach, Lorie Henderson told her after the fall that mistakes happen.

"She gave it her all," said Henderson. "I basically said to her ‘congratulations, you're an Olympian’ and I told her I couldn't have asked for more from her."

It was the first Olympic Games for both Henderson and Onyshko. Henderson is happy they were able to experience it together.

"Everything was new for both of us," said Henderson. "We had some good times and some tough times and we talked about it and laughed about it after."

Onyshko’s goal going into the games was to qualify for the finals, which she did in both events. Henderson says, however, Onyshko wasn't satisfied.

"She achieved her goals on the first day, but with Isabela, the next day she changed her goals and she wanted to do better,"

Onyshko and Henderson now have their eyes set on the 2020 Olympic Games, which are set to take place in Tokyo, Japan. But first, after spending a long time in Brazil, the two have decided to take a breather.

"I'm going to take some time off to rest for sure," said Onyshko. "Then I'll be back in the gym."
