The Conservative Party has a new leader and Brandon-Souris MP Larry Maguire likes how the future looks for the party.

Saskatchewan MP Andrew Scheer in what many see as a major upset defeated Quebec MP Maxime Bernier picking up 51% of the votes on the final ballot.

“Erin O'Toole was my candidate and he finished third and his votes went to Mr. Scheer and I look forward to working with our new leader,” said MP Larry Maguire.

Scheer is 38, married and has five children. “He is a young man with children who knows what middle-class families need and require because he is one. He also has lots of experience in the House of Commons from the speaker's chair as well as being house leader before he decided to run for the leadership” said Maguire.

The party continues to work at showing a unified front. Maguire says there isn't a problem with unity because Conservative's have a common goal and that's defeating the Liberals and Justin Trudeau in 2019.

“The party is in great shape. We have about 260,000 members the most ever of parties in Canada that pay for a membership. It is a sign we are strong that way and we have had very good fund raising.

The Conservatives feel there is a desire to get back to what it calls fiscal accountability and responsibility.

When it comes to the social issues Maguire says the new leader will focus on issues that keeps them together and moves them forward and dealing with issues Canadians care about on a daily basis.

“Mr. Scheer isn't making any changes in critic duties before the House of Commons wraps up on June 23rd.
