Oakville will be getting a new community hall in the coming years.

The land for the project was sold to the Oakville Community Club by the RM of Portage la Prairie for $1.00

"The RM owns a 25-acre chunk of land right there next to the skating and curling rinks, so we're selling a five acre parcel of land -- just on the east side of the skating rink -- to the Oakville Community Club. So they can take the next steps of making that hall a reality."

Oakville Community Club President Dennis Galbraith says their community hall is by far their oldest building. "We've been faced with the dilemma of doing either a major renovation, or a full replacement. We've been doing research for about five years on various options, and about a year ago we made the decision that replacement was the best route to go."

"We're in the early stages of working with an architect and engineer to design a building," says Galbraith. "We're looking at one that would totally encompass about 10,500 square feet. About two-thirds of that would be dedicated to a new community hall, and a third of the space would be dedicated to a 40 space day care."

Galbraith says the community is rather short of daycare, and he's heard numerous requests from new members of the community to increase the daycare capability of the community. He adds they're still about five years out from occupying the building, but fundraising will begin soon. Check out the Oakville webpage, or email newhalloakvillemb@gmail.com if you'd like to donate.
