Southport's community will soon be getting a little bigger thanks to new housing development going up in the area.

A ribbon cutting ceremony was held this morning for the two new rental units which are being constructed on Portage Street. Southport Aerospace Centre CEO Peggy May explains the new housing comes as part of a develop they had been planning for some time.

"With all the new development in Portage la Prairie and in our region, and the fact that we have all our 188 rental units occupied with a waiting list, we anticipate that this need would be here for new rental units," explains May. "These are the first two on a long-term plan where we'll grow this community. We've already received inquiries on these two units which is wonderful."

She describes the new units as modern and upscale.

"Double attached garages, three bedrooms, two baths and they have a lovely view of the region, the landscape," says May. "This is a really lovely community because there are lots of green spaces, lots of walking areas, there's a daycare on site, there's a state of the art recreation facility and golf course. It's a really nice place to live."

May adds the first phase of the development should be done this fall, with two more units planned for next year.
