Stonewall and surrounding area are going to see a change to their Handi-Van service this month.

Lorna Broadfoot is the chairperson for S.A.M.S. She explains the need for the change.

"We were approached by the health authority indicating that we were the last in our region, at least that had Handivans that were tied in with the regional health and the municipalities as they currently exist, and they were looking to move away from that. We're just working towards how that looks and we're getting close to that."

They'll also be going under a new name. Broadfoot explains why they're changing it.

"With the talk about Handi-Van and the way we view words these days, and what have you. That's when we decided to try a completely new name without having the word handi-Van in it. (It's the) same service, but (now it's) the Stonewall and Area Mobility Services."

She notes the health authority has paid the drivers until March 24, so they will take over the service on March 25th. She says they still have some steps they need to fill.

"We're putting out a job competition in the next couple of weeks to get a coordinator. Once we have our coordinator in place, then we'll start working towards hiring the drivers that we need to be able to run the mobility service."

S.A.M.S will also cover the RM of Rockwood, RM of Rosser, and the RM of Woodlands.
