There will be little more space to hide away from the sun and enjoy a meal at Island Park in Portage la Prairie soon.

The city is building a new picnic shelter after receiving a $22,500 Canada 150 grant. The shelter will house between six to eight picnic tables; It will be located in close proximity to Splash Island to help service the users of the facility throughout the summer months, parks manager Dave Green says.

"We've been talking about trying to put up an additional shelter for a few years," Green explains. "We just didn't have the funding. So this is great. We do have a lot of other shelters at Island Park and this will help take some of the pressure off some of those."

Construction on the shelter will begin within the next two weeks and should be complete by the end of June.
