There's a new tiny team in the Portage hockey world. The Squirts Portage Island on the Prairies team has recently formed in town.

Team Coordinator Travis Rintoul says the team has the city's fresh new slogan.

"So we thought being that this is a brand new hockey program, we would adopt the new tourism logo onto the new jerseys and run with that, so here we are," says Rintoul.

Rintoul notes he wasn't sure at first if he'd have enough interest to be able to pay for ice time.

"Fast forward about a week-and-a-half, and then I had about 36 kids registered," says Rintoul. "So I wasn't sure if I'd have enough parents to help out. But I'm really blessed to have an abundance of both- lots of parents to help out on the ice, and lots of kids skating their hearts out for a good hour."

Rintoul says the team is comprised of five and six-year-olds, who play once a week until April in an extended hockey season.
