The Whoop and Hollar Folk Festival's first open mic event at the Portage la Prairie Legion was an unqualified success. It was a full house as local performers took to the stage. Organizer Josh Wright calls it very satisfying to see.

"And as an organizer, partnering with different organizations in the community, it just reflects the power of collaboration," he says, "And connection with other organizations to bring events like this to the community."

Wright feels it's an indication the community loves and supports the arts.

"Local musicians, comedians -- so far we have primarily musicians performing tonight," he says, "But it reflects a strong arts community, and a love for gathering together, and celebrating music, and tapping into the hidden secrets of our community."

Bob OldfordLegion President Bob Oldford's pleased.

"It's really nice to see all these folks in here," he says, "And the music's been good. We're glad that we could partner with Whoop and Hollar, Badlands Promotions, Visions of Independence, and the Sawmill (Cafe), and we're looking forward to future ones."

Edgar Desjarlais performed, and thinks it offers a great opportunity for young artists.

"It's a great venue for them to come," he says, "There are no restrictions here, and everybody's having a great time, and I love it."

Jules AudetJules Audet travelled from Fannystelle to participate, to ensure there were enough performers. He calls it pure enjoyment.

"We don't have a venue like this in Fannystelle," he says, "Where musicians can gather, and show their stuff off. I think it's great."

Brett Finney was in the audience, and hopes people in the area will continue to support the event.

"Like I said to my daughter when I was convincing her to come with me," he says, "I said aren't you curious to see who you you might see every day, and have no idea, and then you see how talented they really are."

The open mic event's going to be held the last Friday of each month at the Legion.
