This week sees the start of the Pals On the Playground for the next six weeks.

Recreation Opportunities for Kids recreation supervisor Lynne Parker shares how the idea came about.

"I was driving by the playground one night, and I saw a bunch of kids out there playing. Just before that, I also talked to a mom who had some issues with her son being bullied in the evening when he was at the playground. So, I just kind of thought it should be fun, and it should be a safe place for kids to be. That's just kind of where the idea came from."

She outlines the schedule.

"Monday nights are going to be Fort la Reine. Tuesday nights are going to La Verendrye. And Wednesday nights are North Memorial. And we just show up at 6:30 and hang out with the kids, play some games. They can blow bubbles. There's chalk for sidewalks. There's basketballs. There's hoola hoops. We play soccer. There are all kinds of things. We just hang out and have fun with the kids."

If you want to volunteer and hang out with the kids, you just need a criminal check and child abuse registry check. Parker notes they register the kids for their own files and emergency contact numbers, and some photos for a release. It's somewhat of a registration, but kids can show up without having registered, and may bring home a registry form to return or bring to school.
