The Portage Terriers Peewee "AA" team presented two cheques Thursday afternoon to local charities in the thousands of dollars.

Al PattersonHead coach Al Patterson explains they applied to be included in the Good Deeds Cup Challenge across the nation for peewee-aged groups. they then volunteered at the local soup kitchen and were the regional winners to compete nationally, and gave $5,000 to the kitchen.

He says an issue arose that put a question on the voting process. The solution was to grant more funds to every team.

"They ended up giving all of the groups a little bit of extra money so they can continue with the donation to the same organization, or they had an opportunity to spread it out a little bit." says Patterson. "This is the case we're doing -- we're going to donate that extra $2,000 to the BDO Centre for the Community."

Soup kitchen representation Tricia Chiponski says it's amazing to get the money, noting she can't believe such young people did so much to help the community.

Shane MoffattCentennial Community Club president Shane Moffatt adds it's pretty cool to get $2,000 from kids who actually use the rink, adding Al Patterson and the team did great.

"That's why this rink is open. It's for these kids. We'll put this money back into the facility. We're buying exercise equipment for our work-out area. It's just great to see the support we're getting -- not only from the community but now from the kids of the community. Having done this for ten years now, I think it's pretty cool the rink has come this far."
