Canada's newest political party is trying to establish a political following in Portage la Prairie.

The People's Party of Canada held a meeting last night to establish a game plan for the 2019 election. Jim Smith President of the PPC for Portage-Lisgar explains what the party is all about.

"The People's Party has Libertarian roots. So, it's a big believer in freedom of speech, freedom of association, freedom of religion, basic freedom at an individual level," Smith adds. "The Peoples Party prefers to have small government as opposed to big government. The party really believes that local individuals and local communities are best to solve their own problems as opposed to a top-down approach from the Federal Government."

The Party formed in September of 2018 after Maxime Bernier split from the Conservative Party of Canada. So far the party has a preliminary candidate for the Portage-Lisgar riding but Smith notes that they are still accepting nominations and hope to decide in the next three weeks.

Smith outlines what the PPC's strategy is to get the word out before the Federal election on October 20th.

"Every new party faces that hurdle of getting the word out and getting it out economically. So, again, grassroots, word of mouth, local meetings, meet and greet type things, and some advertising," Smith adds. "We're going to have board members from every part of the riding to promote the party and the candidate."
