“It's about perfect for a non-profit organization.“ That's from BDO Canada partner Todd Birkhan, auditor for the Portage Friendship Centre's annual general meeting last night, describing the Centre's financial report.

Todd Birkhan presenting financial report“They took in about three quarters of a million dollars worth of revenue, and ultimately spent about all of it except about $10,000 on program delivery and capital items,” says Birkhan. “So, ultimately they ended up in a small surplus. But that's about perfect for a non-profit organization."

He said the Centre maximized its service delivery with funds available for the second year, but didn’t spend funds they didn’t have. Birkhan notes it’s their second year of financial surplus, though not massive, which is a credit to management and the board of directors.

Board president Jacqueline Lippens attributes their success to a great staff and executive director, adding when a caring community comes together great things can be accomplished. She notes it feels really good to know that during difficult times the Centre can still function at its best and continue its support for the community. Lippens adds the auditor’s report was definitely the highlight of the evening, considering their less fortunate situation four years ago.
