Delta Beach, north of Portage la Prairie, will soon have something it's been lacking since being devastated by the flood of 2011.

A picnic shelter's going to be constructed there some time this spring or summer.

That's from RM of Portage Councillor Larry Gibbs, who acknowledges there's a lot of work to be done there.

"But the picnic shelter was given to me to head a committee, and come up with some quotes on it," he says, "And replace what was there before. This'll be maybe slightly better, or bigger, than the previous one, and it should be up above the sand. The old one was drifted under. Hopefully it gets built by mid-summer."

Gibbs says it's a $21,000 project, plus tax, and outlines how the bill will be paid.

"We have an allocation from Disaster Financial Assistance for $9400, toward replacing it," he says, "And that doesn't come close to meeting the cost, so the RM has set aside funding for completion of the campground, and we're taking it from that fund."

He adds Bailey Homes was awarded the contract for the shelter.

Gibbs points out the construction could be affected by high water over the next few weeks.
