The proposed accessible playground in north Portage la Prairie took a step forward at Monday's City Council meeting.

Council approved a request for proposal for the design and installation.

Councillor Brent Budz is pleased, calling it a nice addition.

"It's something that's been budgeted for," he says, "And also with contributions from the federal government and the Community Foundation, as well as a potential donor. So we're excited about that development -- it'll be a good addition in the north end."

Budz isn't certain when construction will start.

"That's still got some work to do," he says, "We've approved it, and obviously, there's some work to do in that area first, so we expect to have it probably not up this year, but potentially next year, for sure."

Blue Bmp's tender of just under $135,000 was accepted by Council. Funding breaks down to $15,000 from the Community Foundation of Portage and District, plus $60,000 each from the City and Canada 150. An additional $10,000 may come from a donor later.
