A new survey shows that Portage la Prairie is a pretty good place to live. The annual Moneysense Magazine list of the best places to live in Canada has been announced. Portage finished 49th out of the almost 200 cities that were profiled. That's an improvement of 11 spots from the 2011 results. Mayor Earl Porter says it is great to see our community is going in the right direction.

Portage la Prairie scored its highest marks for housing prices and jobless rates.  Our crime rate however was not good though it has still seen improvement since last year. Porter says the gradual improvement that was seen year over year is still a positive.  Portage finished ahead of major metropolitans such as Montreal, St John's and Vancouver this year. We also received a better ranking than Manitoba cities Steinbach and Thompson.

Brandon and Winnipeg both finished in the top ten at 6th and 10th respectively.  As for the best place to live in Canada, for the third year in a row, Ottawa has taken the top spot. The complete list can be found at www.moneysense.ca
