The Portage Peewee AA Terriers are Manitoba's winners of the Chevrolet Hockey Canada Good Deeds Cup.

They won the award for helping out at the Portage la Prairie Soup Kitchen earlier in the hockey season. Head coach Al Patterson says they've been awarded $2,000 for the team and another $2,000 for the charity of their choice.

"It's pretty awesome," says Patterson, "I'm not going to lie I was shocked when I got the phone call saying we'd won. At the end of the day, we are lucky enough to win something for the Portage Soup Kitchen, which is nice. Now we're hoping that a lot of people will get online and vote for us and our good deed, and the plan is to set it up so that we go back in the second half and make sure we finish off by making the donation of $2,000 to the soup kitchen."

Patterson says it started off with a couple of kids from the team planning on helping out at the Portage Soup Kitchen.

"I happened to find out about the Good Deeds Cup and I talked to my wife about it. She thought it was an awesome idea to get the kids out to the Soup Kitchen. So they went and filled in the spot that a few of the families were supposed to do and it worked out really nice. It was a great opportunity for the kids to see some of the nice things about helping other people in the community that are in need."

The competition is heading into the voting portion where people can vote once a day for a team they feel should win the grand prize including a feature profiling the team on Sportsnet. A winner's ceremony in the team's hometown with Canadian Olympian Caroline Ouellette. $10,000 cash for the team and $5,000 for a charity of their choice. A Good Deeds Cup Championship banner to hang in the home arena and the names of each player will be engraved on the Cup which is kept at Hockey Canada Headquarters in Calgary.

Go to www.ChevroletHockey.com and vote for Portage Peewee AA Terriers. Voting opens Thursday, March 23rd, at 12:00 a.m. Eastern and closes on Wednesday, March 29th at 11:59 p.m. Eastern. Each individual can vote once every 24 hours.
