Hundreds turned out for Portage la Prairie's Family Day at Fort la Reine School yesterday.

The event was an initiative by the City of Portage la Prairie, with many local organizations volunteering their time and supplies for the event. The Portage Community Revitalization Corporation was gave out free items, as well as offering free face painting. Community Facilitator Victoria Olson gives her view on the night.

"This is such a really good event. It's free for the community, it brings everybody out, it's a beautiful day, what more could you ask for? There was quite a line up for the face painting and we're just really excited to be here, and be a part of this."

Youth City Councillor Donnovan Hillman was pleased with the turnout and speaks to the community support.

One of the games set up for kids at the event.

"It's huge. You don't really know what to expect when you go knocking on their doors as the City of Portage la Prairie, but the response is amazing. It not only points a good light on us as the City -- instead of us always collecting taxes where we give back to the community -- it puts a good light on to all of these organizations that come out and really support the community, really support the families free of charge."

The Family Resource Centre was another organization that helped out, and Executive Director Cathy Vanstone says it's nice to partner for this kind of event.

"It's wonderful to have the opportunity to share with the community all the programs and resources we have. And also just to join up with a lot of other agencies and community groups to show the community all the resources that are available in Portage la Prairie -- because there's a lot -- and pretty much everything here is available free of charge or very low cost."

Other organizations involved included Visions of Independence, Central Plains Cancer Care, the Portage Plains United Way, Recreation Opportunities for Kids, Youth For Christ, and the Portage Friendship Centre.
