Portage la Prairie's in good shape when it comes to the Province's review on cosmetic pesticides.

Mayor Irvine Ferris says it's going to hit some municipalities pretty hard, but not Portage.

"This has a huge impact on some of our 137 municipalities. I'll give you an example, the city of Steinbach estimates their cost for weed control will increase 10-fold, based upon the new regulations. So that's a major impact. Here in Portage the impact is significantly less. Dave Green, our Manager of Operations, has been working for a number of years at decreasing the use of pesticides, and looking at alternative control measures. So there is some impact here."

Portage la Prairie's very progressive when it comes to alternative control measures according to Ferris.

"Certainly we have some very progressive staff like Dave Green, that are constantly looking at how we manage the things we have to manage in a more environmentally friendly way. This is something that the staff deserve the full credit for it. They've been very progressive, they're thinking about the future, and I'm very proud of the work they do."

Ferris adds they aren't planning on sending in a report to the government.
