Portage la Prairie RCMP have laid charges following two motor vehicle accidents in the last 24 hours.

The most recent was early this morning on Highway 331, south of the city, involving a cyclist and a vehicle. Constable Sean O'Keefe says it happened just before 8 this morning, and they were notified by a passing driver.

"And quickly let us know of this incident. When ourselves and the EMS arrived on-scene, we were speaking with the cyclist who had been struck by a vehicle on the side of the road. Shortly after we arrived on-scene, though, the motorist involved returned to the scene, and was charged with failing to remain at the scene of an accident."

O'Keefe says the cyclist suffered some bumps and bruises, but is alright.

O'Keefe says the second mishap occurred yesterday afternoon around 3 o'clock, when a van and car collided on Saskatchewan Avenue West, near the Sobey's/Co-op intersection.

"In that instance, we believe that one of the drivers proceeded through a red light, and caused the collision, while the other had the right of way, and that's the charge that was laid against that 63 year old male driver. We had no indication of a serious injury as a result of the collision. Thankfully, a lot of the safety features of the vehicles were in play, so those mitigated a lot more serious injuries."

O'Keefe adds one person was temporarily trapped in a vehicle, but was able to get out without help. He notes one person was taken to hospital, but there are no updates on that.
