To ensure you have a safe holiday weekend, the local RCMP are engaging in a program entitled Operation Impact. Sergeant Brian Brewer outlines what you can expect.

"Obviously with the Thanksgiving weekend, or long weekends, there's going to be extra traffic. Operation Impact is selective traffic enforcement for that weekend. We have officers out in the road paying special attention to driving, and making sure everybody's driving safely."

He notes the program begins today and takes place until Monday evening.

"We collect stats. We've asked our officers who will be making a special effort to be on the roads and concentrating on traffic and traffic offenses and trying to keep the public safe on this holiday weekend."

Brewer says they're keeping an eye out for the "Big 4".

"The 'Big 4' is impaired driving, occupant restraint use seat belts, and all aspects related to speed and distracted driving. Those Big 4 are where we seem to have the most issues and the most crashes and deaths. So we will concentrate on those so that everyone driving will be as safe as can be. The whole purpose is to take dangerous drivers off the road."
