A text message scam has been popping up on mobile phones in the Portage la Prairie area, the RCMP says.

Police say multiple reports have come in about local residents receiving a text message claiming to be from Rogers. The message tells the recipient they are eligible to receive a refund due to being overcharged by the company on a bill. It provides a link to click to claim the refund. The link then requests personal banking information to complete the transaction, but ends up stealing your information.

"Most reputable companies won't send you text messages or emails about refunds," explains RCMP Sgt. Brian Brewer. "When receiving something like this through text message or via email, it's generally going to be a fraud that you shouldn't follow."

"What they're preying on is the lure of receiving a refund," Brewer continues. "Before long you may have inadvertently provided information that may be damaging, allowing someone to access your personal financial information."

The RCMP says recipients of this type of text message should just delete it. Police also advise contacting mobile phone service providers whenever money is involved for clarification to avoid falling victim to fraud.
