June 27th
Portage la Prairie Traffic Services observed a motorist, known to have a suspended driver’s license, pull into a parking lot. The female driver (68 years old) was suspended Canada-wide from operating a motor vehicle. The vehicle was towed and impounded at the owner’s expense. The driver will be appearing in court on criminal charges of driving while prohibited.

A motorist was observed travelling at 145 km/h in a 100 km/h zone along Hwy 1. The female driver (46 years old) was issued a fine in the amount of $639.25.

June 28th
Portage la Prairie RCMP recovered a stolen ATV, and took one youth into their custody as a result. Police learned that the vehicle was at a home on 16th Street NW, and that the male youth (16 years old) was presently inflating a flat tire. Officers arrived in time to prevent the youth from escaping on the stolen ATV. The youth was held in custody until such time as he could be brought before the court, as he was bound to other court imposed conditions of release.

A motorist was observed travelling at 146 km/h in a 100 km/h zone along Hwy 1. The male driver (25 years old) was issued a fine in the amount of $652.50.


June 29th
A motorist was observed travelling at 153 km/h in a 100 km/h zone along Hwy 1. The male driver (23 years old) was issued a fine in the amount of $744.50.

Portage la Prairie RCMP were informed of a possible stolen truck being driven along Saskatchewan Avenue, and stopping at the Bottle Stop vendor. The truck had reportedly been stolen from the Ebb and Flow First Nation earlier in the day, and was recognized by the complainant thanks to a post on Facebook. Police surrounded the vehicle and took two male suspects into custody, arrested for being in possession of stolen property. Criminal charges are pending against the 44 year old Winnipeg man, and a 43 year old Portage man.

June 30th
While on patrol of Saskatchewan Avenue, officers observed a car drive over the curbside in front of the Mac’s Convenience store. Once police stopped the vehicle they quickly learned that male driver (24 years old) was intoxicated by way of alcohol. The driver was arrested for impaired operation of a motor vehicle, and subsequently refused to provide breath samples. His driver’s license will be suspended for a minimum of 3 months, and the vehicle was towed and impounded for a minimum of 60 days at the owner’s expense.

Police were called to a theft in progress on Meighen Avenue, where the complainant caught someone going through their car. Officers arrived and took an 18 year old male into their custody. Criminal charges are pending against the male. Police remind everyone to lock their vehicles, and refrain from leaving anything of value inside. Never, under any circumstance, leave the keys for the vehicle “hidden” inside; never leave a running vehicle unattended.

A motorist was observed travelling at 136 km/h in a 100 km/h zone along Hwy 1. The female motorist (17 years old) was issued a fine in the amount of $521.75.

July 1st
Canada Day celebrations were well attended by community members, with very few calls for police. Officers were required to enforce the Liquor and Gaming Control Act with several instances of open liquor and public intoxication. After the fireworks display, police were called to a large fight around Portage Collegiate Institute. Several reports of 20-30 youths fighting each other around the school resulted in people being detained, but no arrests made.

Treherne RCMP are asking for the assistance of the community in identifying an ATV found in the St. Claude area. The vehicle in question is a blue 1985 Yamaha Moto. Investigators area asking that if you recognize the vehicle (pictured) that you contact your local police detachment. If the vehicle belongs to you, proof of same will be required (ie: registration, ownership, knowledge of identifying marks, etc.) in order to recover it.

July 2nd
Portage la Prairie RCMP observed a vehicle perform a U-Turn and nearly strike the curbside. Officers stopped the vehicle, and once in contact with the male driver (40 years old), quickly determined that he was under the influence of alcohol. The driver was arrested for impaired operation of a motor vehicle, and his subsequent breath samples were over double the legal limit. His driver’s license will be suspended for a minimum of 3 months, and the vehicle was towed and impounded for 60 days at the owner’s expense.

Police, EMS and the STARS medical helicopter were called to the Jackson Lake area in the early morning hours of July 3rd. A 23 year old male was injured after a 21 year old male allegedly threw several small calibre bullets into a camp fire. The injured male was transported via STARS to Winnipeg for medical attention, and later released from care with non-life threatening injuries. The suspect was arrested without incident and taken into police custody. Criminal charges are pending as the matter is still under investigation.

Three intoxicated females were arrested for assault outside the Cat and Fiddle bar as the establishment was closing. All three, between the ages of 19 and 23, were held in custody to ensure public safety. The females were all charged under the Liquor and Gaming Control Act for disorderly conduct in or around a licensed premises, with fines in the amount of $673.65 each.

Police received a report of patrons refusing to leave the Tavern United bar at the Canad Inns hotel. Officers arrived to find several suspects in and around a car parked outside the bar. One male (28 years old) was charged under the Liquor and Gaming Control Act for consuming liquor in a public place, with a fine in the amount of $673.65.

July 3rd
While patrolling Austin, officers observed an older model GMC Jimmy, which matched the description of a vehicle believed to be uninsured. Checks were run on the license plate, and confirmed the investigator’s suspicion. Police would observe a male driver (33 years old) drive away in the vehicle a short time later. In speaking with the driver, police learned that he did not have a valid driver’s license, as he was prohibited from driving Canada-wide. The driver was arrested and taken into police custody, where he remained until being brought before the court. The vehicle was towed and impounded at the owner’s expense.
