The following is a summary of police activity in the Central Plains Area (Portage la Prairie, Treherne, Amaranth and the surrounding Rural Municipalities). The reporting dates are between Feb. 6 and Feb. 12, 2017. During this time period police responded to: 229 calls for service.

BLOODY MAN KICKED FROM TRUCK
On Feb. 9, at 1:19 PM, Portage la Prairie RCMP were called to the Husky gas station on Saskatchewan Avenue E. An unidentified male was reportedly seen bleeding from his face, after he was kicked out of a white pick-up truck in the parking lot. The victim was gone by the time police arrived, and the suspect’s vehicle had left heading west on Saskatchewan Avenue. Investigators are asking to speak with the victim in this incident if they’re willing to come forward, or to anyone with knowledge of this incident. MAN FACES MULTIPLE CHARGES
Portage la Prairie RCMP were called to a home on 1st Street NW in the early hours of morning Feb. 10. Reports of violence in the home and damage to property resulted in the arrest of 34-year-old Raynold Sheldon Roulette. Roulette was held in custody and brought before the court on charges of assault with a weapon, mischief to property, and five counts of failing to comply with a probation order.

DOMESTIC DISTURBANCE
Portage la Prairie RCMP were called to a home on 11th Street NW for a disturbance on Feb. 11. Once in contact with the residents of the home, police determined that two intoxicated male occupants were bound to conditions to abstain from the consumption of alcohol. Arrested and held in custody were Daniel Ronnie St. Paul, 38, and 25-year-old Kevin Benjamin Payne. Both were brought before the courts on charges of failing to comply with court imposed conditions, and in St. Paul’s case, a further charge for resisting arrest.

HOUSE FIRE
Portage la Prairie emergency services were called to a house fire on Road 77N in the RM of Portage la Prairie on Feb. 12. Portage la Prairie Fire Department extinguished the blaze, the cause of which is still under investigation. Police do not believe anyone was harmed in the incident, and do not believe it to be suspicious in nature at this time.

ERRATIC DRIVING
A motorist was observed weaving across both lanes of traffic on Hwy 1 on Feb. 6. The vehicle was pulled over to ensure the driver’s ability to operate a motor vehicle was not impaired, and that they were not distracted behind the wheel. Officers believed the male driver, 35, had recently consumed alcohol before driving, and asked that a sample of his breath be provided to a roadside screening device. The driver reportedly refused to do so, and was subsequently arrested and held in custody for failing to provide a breath sample. The driver also faces charges for having open liquor in the vehicle, and driving to the left without regard for safety (swerving across two lanes of traffic), with fines amounting to $412.80. The driver’s vehicle was towed and impounded for a period of 30 days at the owner’s expense.

DRIVING RELATED OFFENCES
On Feb. 7, Portage la Prairie RCMP observed a vehicle on Saskatchewan Avenue, known to be owned by a prohibited driver. Officers came in contact with that same owner behind the wheel of the vehicle. The female driver, Margaret Cohoon, 69, was arrested for driving while prohibited and held in police custody until she could be brought before the court. The vehicle was towed and impounded for 90 days at the owner’s expense.

On Feb. 8, Portage la Prairie RCMP were called to the 400 block area of 6th Street NE, where a vehicle had reportedly was stuck in a snow bank, and the driver had been trying to get it free. Callers were concerned, as the driver was reportedly slumped behind the wheel of the running vehicle. Officers arrived to find Paul Frederick Grigg, 61, in the driver’s seat, and determined that he was prohibited from operating a motor vehicle. Grigg was arrested and held in police custody until he could be brought before the court. The vehicle was towed and impounded for 90 days at the owner’s expense.

SPEEDY DRIVING
Portage la Prairie RCMP were made aware of a motorist heading east on Hwy 1 on Feb. 6, reportedly travelling at an excessively high rate of speed while both weather and road conditions were very poor. Officers located the vehicle, observing their speed at 167 km/h in a 110 km/h zone on Hwy 1. The male driver, 25, was given fines in excess of $1000.00 for speeding and driving imprudently given the road and weather conditions.
