The following is a summary of police activity in the Central Plains Area (Portage la Prairie, Treherne, Amaranth and the surrounding Rural Municipalities). The reporting dates are between June 12 and June 18, 2017. During this time period police responded to: 323 calls for service.

ATTEMPTED ROBBERY SUSPECT AT LARGE
Portage la Prairie RCMP are asking for the assistance of the community in locating a suspect involved in an attempted robbery June 14. Police received a report of an unidentified Indigenous male having threatened a youth with a knife, demanding the youth give over their backpack. The suspect is described as being between 19 and 24 years of age, standing 5’8” tall, with a very thin build, wearing a black sweater and blue jeans. The victim received minor injuries when they refused to turn over their property and fled the area on foot. Investigators are asking that anyone that can identify this suspect contact the Portage la Prairie RCMP at 204-857-4445, or your local police detachment. Tips leading to the identification and prosecution of the suspect could receive cash awards.

DOMESTIC DISTURBANCE LEADS TO ARREST
As a result of a disturbance in a home police were called to a fight June 13 on Lorne Avenue E. Officers spoke with everyone involved, attempting to determine if anything criminal had taken place. When asked for his identity, one male witness provided a false name, as he had several warrants for his arrest. The male, Shawn David Junior Francouer, 18, was arrested for obstruction and on the strength of his warrants. Francouer was held in police custody until such time as he was brought before the court.

LIQUOR STORE THEFTS
On June 13, Portage la Prairie RCMP were called to Liquor Mart on Saskatchewan Avenue, after two suspects stole a large quantity of liquor from the store. Police were able to determine the identity of both suspects, a male and a female, and were able to take both into custody a short time later. The female, 32, was released from police custody, set to appear in court at a later date on a charge of theft under $5000; the male, John Allen Aymont (34 years old) was held in police custody until such time as he could be brought before the court on charges of theft under $5000 and failing to comply with court imposed conditions.

Portage la Prairie RCMP were called to the Liquor Mart on Saskatchewan Avenue June 16, as there was another incident of shoplifting. Police recognized the female suspect in the matter, and arrested her within an hour. The suspect, Jessica Lynn Aymont, 32, was held in police custody until such time as she could be brought before the court on charges of theft under $5000 and failing to comply with court imposed conditions.

ATV STOLEN IN TREHERNE
Treherne RCMP are asking for the assistance of the community in locating a stolen ATV from the Haywood area June 17. Owners of the vehicle report that their black 2007 Arctic Cat 400, with Manitoba license plate 100Y8, was last seen June 16th. ATV OPERATOR FINED
Portage la Prairie RCMP were patrolling the area of Yellowquill Crescent June 12 when they spotted a male driving an ATV on a roadway, and without a helmet. The vehicle was stopped and the male driver, 53, was issued fines for operating an off-road vehicle without a driver’s license, and for failing to wear a helmet. As a result of the driver not possessing a valid driver’s license the ATV was towed and impounded at the owner’s expense. Police wish to remind all off-road vehicle owners that they must be operated in the manner laid out by Manitoba’s Off-Road Vehicle Act.

DRUNK DRIVER NABBED
Portage la Prairie RCMP were called to the Mac’s Convenience Store on Saskatchewan Avenue June 18, as a concerned motorist noticed another driver might be under the influence of alcohol. Officers arrived on scene just as the suspect’s vehicle was pulling away from the gas pumps. A traffic stop was initiated and the female driver pulled over. It was at this point that the female driver and a male passenger attempted to switch spots inside the vehicle. Officers arrested the female driver, 30, for impaired operation of a motor vehicle, as well as the male passenger, 35, for obstruction of a police officer. The driver’s subsequent breath samples were over the legal limit, and would have her driver’s license suspended for a minimum of 3 months. The vehicle was towed and impounded for a minimum of 30 days. The male passenger was released from police custody without charges at this time.

SPEEDY DRIVING
On June 15, a motorist was observed travelling at 108 km/h in a 70 km/h zone on Hwy 50 near Amaranth. The female driver (31 years old) was issued a fine in the amount of $548.25.
