The following is a summary of police activity in the Central Plains Area (Portage la Prairie, Treherne, Amaranth and the surrounding Rural Municipalities). The reporting dates are between June 19 and June 25, 2017. During this time period police responded to: 268 calls for service.

TWO ARRESTED FOR MISCHIEF TO PROPERTY
At 1:37 a.m. June 19, the Portage la Prairie RCMP were notified to a mischief to property in progress. Two unidentified male suspects were seen jumping on a parked vehicle next to Blue Moon Water on Saskatchewan Avenue. The suspects were then seen fleeing on foot towards Tupper Street. Police found two male suspect walking in the area, both of whom matched the description given by the caller. The males (17 and 19 years old) were arrested for mischief to property. Both were held in police custody as the investigation continued, and released after a short time, set to appear before the court at a later date. Police wish to encourage everyone to call when a suspicious incident is taking place, as timely call to police and a quick response resulted in those responsible for the damages being brought before the court.

THEFT LEAVES BOAT MOTORLESS
A boat owner on Strathcona Road was the victim of a theft, with several items being stolen from his trailered boat June 23. A battery and motor were stolen from the boat by unidentified suspects. Police wish to remind all property owners that off-road vehicles, boats, and heavy equipment should be secured as best as possible when on a trailer. Avoid leaving smaller, easily removed items where they can be grabbed; never leave the ignition keys with the vehicle. MAN FLEES SCENE OF COLLISION
An early morning collision on Highway 1 June 24 resulted in one male driver being arrested for driving while disqualified. Portage la Prairie emergency services were called to the scene of a two vehicle collision, where one of the drivers inexplicably ran from the scene. When officers arrived they searched the area, locating the male driver (25 years old) who was hiding in a wooded area near the highway. Investigators would learn that the driver was presently disqualified from operating any motor vehicle, had not registered or insured his vehicle, and had affixed a stolen license plate. The male was issued several fines in the matter, and will appear in court at a later date.

AUTOMOBILE INCIDENTS
Portage la Prairie RCMP responded to a collision at the intersection of 7th Avenue W and 1st Street NW June 20, shortly before 4:00 p.m. Two vehicles had collided, with one having rear ended the other as it was going through the intersection. Officers issued a fine to one male driver (27 years old) for following too closely, and another to female driver (29 years old) for having not enough child restraint seating. Police wish to remind all motorists to keep their attention on the road while driving, and ensure any child under 9 years old is in a booster seat, and any toddler is in an approved car seat. On June 22 at 4:30 p.m. the Portage la Prairie RCMP responded to a two vehicle collision on Hwy 1, where a Chevrolet Avalanche pick-up truck collided with another truck towing farm equipment. Westbound traffic was backed up for a considerable amount of time, as rescue crews removed the driver from the heavily damaged Avalanche. The male driver (89 years old) was transported to Winnipeg via STARS helicopter, where he was treated for life-threatening injuries. The driver and passenger of the other truck were uninjured as a result of the collision. The matter is still under investigation; no charges have been laid as of this time.

On June 25, Amaranth RCMP responded to a collision on Highway 16 in the RM of Westlake-Gladstone, where a van had reportedly struck a semi-truck head-on. Officers determined that the male driver (23 years old) of the van was deceased; the driver and occupant of the semi-truck were treated for non-life threatening injuries. A RCMP Forensic Reconstructionist was called to the scene in order to assist investigators in determining what lead to the collision. The matter is still being investigated at this time.

SPEEDY DRIVING
A motorist was observed travelling at 142 km/h in a 100 km/h zone on Highway 1 June 25. The female driver (18 years old) was issued a fine in the amount of $609.25.
