The Canadian Red Cross has sent out the call to Manitobans to nominate this year's Manitoba Humanitarians of the Year.

There are two categories this year, including a youth humanitarian.

"What we're looking for is people who have dedicated themselves in volunteer work and philanthropic work to help make the lives of others and to make the world a better place," says Canadian Red Cross spokesman Jason Small. "We've asked people to provide us with nominations and it can be anybody from Manitoba. The young humanitarian is anyone who is under 30."

Small explains the recognition of those who dedicated themselves is important, noting Red Cross is a volunteer-driven organization. He notes they understand how much we need people who give their time freely to improve the lives of others.

"Every year we present both awards at our Power Through Humanity luncheon," adds Small. "We have not set the date for the luncheon, yet, but it traditionally is in early September in Winnipeg and we will be announcing the date and place soon. I just encourage people to think about it and if you know of somebody that is deserving, please go to our website."
