The RM of Cartier is hoping to have its community recycling program expanded to include more of the Hutterite colonies within its borders. Reeve Dale Fossay says over the last few years some colony members have begun actively recycling material out of their yards, noting the municipality will be contacting those colonies which haven't yet participated to see if they would also like to recycle. Fossay says the kids learn about the importance of recycling in school, so it's gone very well with the colonies who are already part of the program. He notes Cartier has eleven colonies in total and six are actively recycling, adding they hope to engage a few more in the coming year.

Fossay says there's no cost to the colony or anyone else who participates in the program. He notes the municipality does recover some of the costs involved when they get paid for the recycled materials. Fossay says recycling definitely directs waste away from the landfill, adding those landfill holes are very costly to dig. He notes if recycled materials can be put to good use by the community at large, so much the better.
