The Assiniboine River's expected to crest around Portage la Prairie some time tomorrow, and the RM of Portage is prepared.

That's from Reeve Kam Blight, who cautiously says it appears the municipality is in a good position.

"It is becoming anxious times, but as of right now, I think we're going to be okay," he says, "The timing is good, I guess, if you can say that. The flows should be manageable. Unfortunately, they anticipate the Souris River and the Assiniboine River at Brandon to crest at the same time, so we're seeing the two peaks come in at the wrong time. But, hopefully as it all plays out, we might see a bit of a delay there."

Portage DiversionBlight describes this as a tense and stressful time, and the RM's on high alert.

"We're definitely on high alert. We're very encouraged to hear from the province that they're suggesting that the peak flows are going to be very short in duration -- only a couple of days, so that's very encouraging. And they expect the numbers to start drawing down rather quickly, and have those numbers down to a very manageable state within ten to fourteen days."
