Work is complete on a $45,000 project to widen 2nd Street Southwest near Carman Elementary School. Mayor Bob Mitchell says the former parallel parking was replaced with diagonal parking and the sidewalk relocated onto school property.

"Everybody seems happy," says Mitchell. "The street is widen, there's better parking...it's just safer and that's why we did that."

Meantime, improvements to a Carman storm drain will upgrade the existing pipe that runs on the east side of Highway #13 from 3rd Avenue to 2nd Avenue SE. Mitchell says the project is part of the planned reconstruction of the major roadway through town.

"Prior to being able to do any of the upgrades, we have to redo the storm drain. It just needs upgrading, bigger piping and that kind of thing."

He adds the $277,239 contract has been awarded to Maple Leaf Construction.

"That'll get done next year and that'll then hopefully coordinate with the province to be able to get the highway done too."
