The Municipality of Westlake-Gladstone council moved forward with plans to raise water rates. Mayor David Single explains the process involved.

"We hired Dale Lyle to do a study dealing with the Yellowhead Utility, which is the rural part of our municipality. So, we studied the rates and we passed first reading of the bylaw which will put our rates up about 7%. Now, once first reading is passed it has to go to the Public Utilities Board."

Single explains the reason rates are rising at this point in time.

"Simply because it hasn't been raised for a while and costs are going up. And the Public Utilities Board says you have to have some money in reserve. So, it's basically, to keep the reserves up. It isn't a lot, and this is 7% a year for three years. It's a matter of a few dollars every quarter extra every three years. So, by the end of the three years, it amounts to about 20%."
