Saladbration Day At Yellowquill School

Portage's Yellowquill School completed Saladbration marking the end of their Little Green Thumbs program yesterday.

Laurie Krynski, Sylivia Hocken and Mary Hodge were the teachers of the three classes that participated.  

Krynski shares the excitement.

"We are celebrating the end of the year of being part of the program with little green thumbs. And it's run by Agriculture In The Classroom. We have had an indoor garden in the classroom all year. We've grown beans, peppers and basil, lettuce and tomato.  We have 59 kids in the program. The program fits with our outdoor classroom. The kids have been so excited about this program. It's such an awesome program."

Jessica Brady is with Agriculture In The Classroom, Manitoba Inc., and explains Saladbration. "Today we're having a Saladbration for Little Green Thumbs program here at Yellowquill School. What it is the kids have worked really hard on their Little Green Thumbs garden, an indoor growing program where they get to grow throughout the school year to watch their peppers, tomatoes and lettuce grow. And this is just their chance to celebrate all their hard work, and eat some salad. And they're transplanting some flowers, and they're going to sing our Little Green Thumbs song."

Brady explains their theme song.

"This song is actually part of our national program. It's a singer from Newfoundland created it just for our Little Green Thumbs program."

She adds the kids learned a lot. "So, it's all about gardening, and waiting for things to grow. We have a salad dressing station provided by Canola Growers of Manitoba. Some of the kids will be making their own salad dressing for their salad."

Brady says their program is running in 37 schools throughout the province.
