Tonight at La Verendrye School's a parent awareness presentation focused on the exploitation of children on social media. School liaison officer Constable Amber Storey says they're making parents aware of what to look for on their children's phones.

"We're finding students are having their own devices at younger and younger ages," she explains. "Therefore, they're on the internet downloading social media apps. They have access to the internet pretty much wherever they go. They know where to get free wifi all over the City of Portage la Prairie. So, they're on the internet even when they're waiting in the car for their parents."

Storey says a lot of photos and videos of nude or semi-nude people under the age of 18 are being exchanged, and are illegal regardless of the age of the recipient. She explains every device has a camera, and kids are prone to hit the send button, not realizing once they're sent they can't be taken back.

The event talks place tonight at 7:00 p.m. until 8:00, and a bicycle's being raffled for six to eight-year-old kids who come with a parent or guardian. There'll be break-out sessions with Constables Storey and Gord Olson providing parents with information about resources they can find in Portage la Prairie for students and youth.
