A one day seminar was hosted today by Manitoba Agriculture at the Austin Hall in Austin as part of Beef and Forage Production Day.

The seminar heard discussion from experts on a variety of topics on beef and forage management. Manitoba Agriculture Forage Specialist Jane Thornton was a speaker.

"I've had projects at the Manitoba Beef and Forage Initiative (MBFI) farm for a couple of years now. I'm on very poor quality land, so I'm looking at what we can do on that land to try to improve productivity. Prices are getting high, even for poor quality land," says Thornton.

Thornton's discussion included how to control leaky spurge and mob and sod seeding as part of pasture management.

Manitoba Agriculture Livestock Specialist Shawn Cabak says the event is beneficial to cattle producers in the region.

"Beef and Forage Production Day is an ongoing extension meeting that Manitoba Agriculture organized along with a number of agri-businesses that participate and sponsor. It's an informative and interesting event for cattle producers to take part in to learn more about what's happening in their industry and help them make decisions on their farm," Cabak says.

Other topics discussed at the seminar include livestock manifests and premises identification, the 2018 cattle market outlook, round bale silage, and low stress cattle handling and weaning.

Cabak says the seminar has taken place for the last fifteen years.
