The Community Economic Development program of Community Futures Whitehorse Plains created a grant program, and just presented several groups with a cheque.

"We provided six non-profit organizations in the Community Futures Whitehorse Plains region with creating community growth grants," says Colby Orchard, business analyst. "These grants are $5,000 in non-repayable funds. They're for capital programs."

Orchard says it feels great, especially during the Christmas season, to be on the other side of handing out funds.

He notes what the funds are covering.

"Kitchen upgrades for community clubs, new lighting, we have a new fence that will be going up at the Fort la Reine Museum, a baseball diamond restoration, and roof repairs... a little bit of everything."

The program was planned and budgeted for the overall amount, and they're hoping this remains an annual event. Orchard says it can't be given to everyone, but six great organizations were selected. He notes the grant application process began a little later in the year than what they plan to do in 2018 providing a larger timeframe for applicants. Orchard adds if you're interested, then keep an eye out in the spring of next year.

Coordinator Penny Schoonbaert adds the program was initiated to create economic growth and/or employment in the region, noting such progress is very important. She notes it went very well, and they're happy with it.

The recipients include The Fort La Reine Museum, Oakville Curling Club, Oakland Recreation Club, Southport Aerospace, Elie Community Club, and Prairie Sky Child Care Centre.
