A Spring Choir Concert's taking place in Portage la Prairie Saturday evening at the Prairie Vineyard Church. All proceeds are going to the Portage Women's Shelter. Director Helen White says the Portage Conservatory of Music's held several concerts in the past.

"I've been taking my students to sing there for the last ten years or so, and usually we would have solo artists singing for the band," explains White. "And we would raise money for the Women's Shelter. We have dainties, cakes, coffee and stuff."

She notes they changed things up a little last fall when they started a Junior Choir for children in grades five to eight. A Christmas concert was held with the junior choir. As a result, demand was made known for an adult choir which began in January. So, they're holding the first concert to feature both the junior and adult choirs this weekend.

White says they usually raise a few hundred dollars at their concerts for the Women's Shelter, and popularity has been steadily rising each year.

It all begins at 7:00 p.m. Saturday at the Prairie Vineyard Church at 107 Duke Avenue. Tickets for adults are $8.00 and children 12 and under get in for $5.00. The songs consist of a variety of jazz and pop favourites.
