A local town is taking steps to rejuvenate its beach and welcome back tourism.

St. Ambroise, Man., used to be a bustling hub for tourism and beach days, but the flood of 2011 ravaged the area and left most of it in ruins. Ten years later, a resident is making an effort to restore the grounds to their original state.

The provincial government sent out a request for proposal for the provincial park, and Sterling Ducharme took up the call. He explains what you can expect to see.

"We built a road already in the fall, and then winter set in. (But next month) we'll be starting to build (campground) lots. It's a work in progress, and we're hoping to have anywhere from 20 to 50 seasonal lots ready for this upcoming season," says Ducharme. "(The campground) will also have unserviced areas for seasonal lots as well, due to the short period to get ready for this year."

The campground will bear the name Surfside Beach Campground. Sterling hopes to launch the website for the campground soon and says the St. Ambroise General Store will act as a home-base for their operations.

The end goal is to further expand the campground and have 220 lots ready for next year, and Sterling notes he has more plans up his sleeve.

"There's a permit for a boat launch, and we're still waiting for approval for that. We're going to be opening a concession stand at the beach area, and we're also planning on building a live entertainment venue," says Sterling. "However, this is pending approval from the permits."

He says this will be a great way to hire and employ residents while boosting the local economy.

"It's going to be huge for the St. Ambroise area. The population has gone down over the years as people have moved away," says Ducharme. "It's going to bring a lot of tourism back to the way it used to be. I grew up (in St. Ambroise), and it was a busy place, and we're hoping to see the return of that."
