A new monument was recently unveiled in the community of St Laurent.

The monument features the RM's crest, a giant pickerel, and a bombardier. Reeve Cheryl Smith explains the significance of each.

"We have the crest of the RM which explains the history of the municipality in both languages, both official languages. We have the big, huge pickerel which is significant for our community because of the commercial fishing industry which has been here for forever. We also have a bombardier that actually has the little windows in it. There's a walkway leading up to it where [people] can go and put their faces in there and take a picture."

She says the monument is quite a unique one and it's really well done. She shares people were really impressed when it was unveiled.

"People were just in awe when we unveiled it. We had our three local RCMP that were born and raised here that were in red serge and they marched in the flags and they raised the flags and they also unveiled everything for us so it was a very nice event."

Smith notes the monument was very much a community initiative with financial and in-kind donations toward the $40,000 project being made by local families, contractors and groups.
