Portagers took to the streets to fire slapshots and wrist shots, all in support of a good cause.

The Canadian Cancer Society held its annual fundraiser Stick it to Cancer last Saturday outside of the PCU Centre in Portage la Prairie. Eight teams took part, with the event raising close to $6,000 in support of cancer research.

CCS community coordinator Jennifer Roy says participation and fundraising numbers were down slightly from last year — when the event had 16 teams and raised about $10,000 — but response from the community was still strong and everyone involved enjoyed it.

"There were so many other great community events occurring the same day," Roy says. "But the community response was still strong ... and we were impressed with the fundraising totals."

Roy adds the funds raised from events like Stick it to Cancer go to support cancer research across Canada. In Manitoba, monies help raise awareness and support people living with cancer.
