Celebrity judges were in Winnipeg today supporting the Child Nutrition in Manitoba Council in its Stone Soup fundraiser. Portage la Prairie Mayor Irvine Ferris was also there and says the fundraiser helps support breakfast and snack programs in some of our schools in Portage, including La Verendrye, North Memorial and Fort la Reine.

"The event was very well attended. I think they estimated between 300 and 400 people came by to buy soup and sample the soup," explains Ferris. "So, it was very well attended. Pretty successful by the look of it."

The event featured 12 different soups prepared by Winnipeg Restaurants and are judged. The soup is sold and sampled by those in attendance.

He notes Canada's the only G8 country that doesn't have a universal breakfast school program. Ferris adds children who come to school after having eaten breakfast have less behavioural problems and do better overall.
