It's a less than pleasant start to the work day in southern Manitoba.

The rain and snow from overnight has made driving treacherous, resulting in many highway closures.

So far, the Trans Canada Highway between Winnipeg and the Highway 5 junction is open, but it's closed from there west. The Number 1 isn't in great shape either, with snow-covered and partly snow-covered conditions.

The Portage la Prairie School Division's buses aren't running this morning, and classes in the Oakville and Hutterian Schools are cancelled. Classes are in session for city schools.

If you have to drive today, be extremely careful. If you don't, stay close to home.

If you're walking, watch your step. Streets and sidewalks are covered in pebbled ice, like a curling rink.
