For the first time since 2001, the University of Manitoba Faculty Association has gone on legal strike as of yesterday and a number of Portage Collegiate alumni are affected. First-year student Kaeley Simpson is one of them, explains the majority of her classes are being affected.

"Right now I'm in the Faculty of Science. I'm hoping to obtain my science degree and then I'm hoping to get into med school. So I'm taking five classes right now and four out of those five are being affected by the strike."

Simpson admits it's a very confusing experience for students, especially those in their first year. She notes there are many factors that are up in the air, adding it's hard not to worry about the long term affects the strike may have on your education.

"It's definitely hard to say exactly how our school will be affected. I'm thinking that if things go on for a long period of time that the whole semester will be pushed back. Instead of writing finals in December we will have to write them in January or if it goes on longer than that, maybe even February. Everything will just get pushed back."

Simpson says most students are hoping the UMFA and University of Manitoba are able to come to a fair agreement in a timely matter to keep the school year on schedule.
