The Portage Regional Recreation Authority's come up with a way to continue some swimming lessons, despite the closure of the Shindleman Aquatic Centre set to close at the end of the month. The pool's going to close on October 31st or the first snowfall after a study showed concerns over the structural integrity of the aquatic centre's roof. PRRA General Manager David Sattler says they've now decided to partner with the Days Inn, to help continue some of the lessons that were set to be cancelled for the winter months.

"We're going to be offering swimming lessons on a four -week basis starting in November, from November 8th to December 1st. We'll have nine classes, one class per level, available for some of those individuals looking for swimming lessons."

The loss of swimming programs was a major concern when it was decided the pool would be closed at the end of October, and Sattler says they're pleased to find a way to ensure at least some of the programs continue. He notes the PRRA will be responsible for the cost of renting the Days Inn pool, but says they're hoping to break even thanks to the registration fees. Sattler notes the current agreement has been struck on a trial basis, and they'll see how the first month goes before making any more plans.

"We're pretty excited. We want to try it for the four weeks session starting in November and see how it goes. If it goes well it's something we'll look to increase and enhance starting in the new year. We know this is a different scenario for all involved, so we kind of want to do a test run here and see how that's going to work out for everyone."

The announcement of the pool closure came alongside a legal battle surrounding the construction of the aquatic centre. Reports compiled over the summer showed the structural integrity of the pool roof couldn't be guaranteed under the weight of snow. Reports on the integrity of the rest of the building are also in the works, but have yet to be presented. As a result of the shortcomings in the centre's construction, the City and RM of Portage, and the PRRA have launched legal action against the contractors involved in the PCU Centre's construction. They accuse the contractors involved with the project of breach of duty, breach of contract and negligence.
