A city upgrade of the water treatment plant is taking place in Portage la Prairie, and you may notice some differences in your tap water that will not be too serious, but things you should be made aware of.

City councillor Ryan Espey explains there may be some cloudy water coming from our taps.

"The city of Portage la Prairie water treatment plant is upgrading the treatment process for the removal of inorganic and organic matter in the water being treated," says Espey. "Spring runoff and snowmelt into the Assiniboine River increases the organic loading in the water."

He notes this affects the taste and odour of the water and may result in a temporary musty or stronger than usual chlorine odour.

"Please be assured that the water meets all water quality guidelines and is safe to drink," continues Espey. "The process upgrade is scheduled for completion by mid-April. So, if you notice any of those things that I just mentioned, do not panic."

Espey adds if a serious issue occurs with your water, you will get an advisory from the city.
