Now that it's tax time, we've got some tips for you for getting your returns prepared. H&R Block in Portage franchise owner Dave Foley provides a checklist of items you need to bring in with you.

"That's probably the most common thing. And in Manitoba, you can also make a claim for rent. And if you own a home it's always helpful to bring in your property tax bill as well."

He says recent years have seen increased medical and health concerns among the population. Many qualify and apply for a disability tax credit. Foley adds Manitoba also has a primary care-giver tax credit for those who provide care for others with medical conditions. Some new things this year, if you've sold your principle residence you must record it on your tax return. Teachers and early childhood educators can receive a tax credit if you purchased supplies from your own pocket.

Many people bring in what they think about, the process to work the returns commences, and several pieces of information are often missing and needed to complete the return. So, Foley notes it's best to bring the material in as early as possible.
