Earlier this month, a teacher at Portage la Prairie's La Verendrye School donated her hair to Cancer Care Manitoba, to help provide wigs for people in cancer treatment.
Jennifer Ethans involved students in the process as well, to show them they can help in other ways, besides money.

Jennifer Ethans"Because I know that sometimes that can be tight," she says, "And you want to be able to show them that you can help in other ways. We sold tickets for $1.00, so everybody in the school got really involved and excited. And then on the 5th of October we had an assembly, and we had all the names in a bin, and a student from grade 5 won. He cut off my ponytail, and we took some pictures with it, and sent it into Cancer Care." That grade 5 student was Eric Bruce.

Ethans feels it shows kids they can make a difference.

"If it's a hair donation, grow out their hair," she says, "It really doesn't take that long. You only need 8 inches of hair to be able donate to a cancer wig. And that's something that any of them can do. The can talk to their parents about doing it. It also gets them interested in that idea, and aware that they can make a difference for someone else's lives."
