Students and teachers at Ecole Arthur Meighen School in Portage la Prairie took to the outdoors for a good cause Thursday, holding their Terry Fox Run and Walk.

Teacher Dan Rosset says the run is important for kids because of the cause. He says Terry Fox's message, and his perseverance when running the Marathon of Hope back in 1980 is great inspiration for children.

"I think Terry's message of hope, I think everyone understands what it was. He did a marathon every single day, day after day, and he only had one leg," explains Rosset. "To be able to do that is such a great example for the kids that anything's possible and you just have to choose a goal and try to fulfill it."

Grade 7 students Oceane Asham and Jaeyln Doncon both enjoyed taking part in the event, especially to continue Terry Fox's journey to fight cancer.

Oceane says it's a cause that's important to her: "I'm interested in what Terry Fox did, and I like being outside and active. And I've had people who have died from cancer in my family."

The school raised over $1,200 in support of cancer research.
