A Portage la Prairie resident's sounding the alarm about a text message scam making the rounds.

Tricia MacDonald's husband Darren received a text recently from someone claiming to be from CIBC, telling him about unusual activity on their account, and to click on a link to verify. She says they quickly realized it wasn't legitimate.

"My husband was looking at it, and he said that it was really quite clever, it looked really good, but in the address, the link that it wanted to take you to, instead of '.com','.c-a', it had '.su' in it. And if you open that link and put in the personal information that they wanted you to put in, they would have access to your bank account."

MacDonald notes they contacted CIBC, who confirmed the text was a scam. She adds it's easy to understand how people are caught.

"They're vulnerable to this, because they're thinking the best of everybody. Just a scary situation for some people out there that aren't looking for people that are trying to scam."

Here's how the text looked on the device.
