The Salvation Army of Portage la Prairie's Food Bank is a little more stocked this week, but it's still in search of more this holiday season.

Major Brenda Coles says last week's Jingle Bell Breakfast was a huge success, even though it endured a date change.

"We were really pleased. With the date change, you wonder how it's going to go, but we were really pleased with what came in," Coles says. "The Jingle Bell Breakfast is really a huge start to stocking the food bank for Christmas Hampers, and usually there's not much left afterwards. It really was great for toys and food, and we feel we have a really good start to filling those hampers."

Coles says people felt it made for a very busy Friday with the parade and other activities in town over the weekend, and organizers may look at having the Jingle Bell Breakfast on Thursday's in the future. Coles says she anticipates they'll need 550-600 hampers this year, and she's confident the people of Portage will come through.

"Portage is very generous. They do so much to support the Food Bank and the Christmas effort. We have so many people volunteering this Christmas," explains Coles. "It's the people that give -- not just in food and toys -- but also of their time and money, that's what makes it all happen."

She adds they have about two-and-a-half weeks left in their campaign.
