If you haven't booked you appointment for Portage la Prairie's water meter replacement program, time is running out. City Councillor and Waterworks Chair Wayne Wall says the deadline to make an appointment to have your meter changed is this weekend, in hopes of completing the work mid-June.

"It's been very successful to this point. We're down to the last ten per cent. About eight per cent of that number is people who've been notified and haven't responded. The other two per cent are commercial meters, and meters that have been rescheduled. We want to wrap this program up. The deadline to register for the program is Saturday, and the program will end on June 18th."

Wall notes those who fail to make their appointments could face consequences. He notes those range from simply having to pay for the meter, to more drastic measures.

"It is a mandatory program, and I guess the worst thing that could happen is we could come and shut your water off. To get your water turned back on, we'll install the new meter and charge you $40."

Wall notes those who make an appointment within the program's time frame won't need to pay for the replacement, adding the installation doesn't take long. The new meters aim to eliminate the need for city staff to go door-to-door for meter readings, by broadcasting the readings to city hall for billing purposes.
