The Vintage Cruisers Car Club made a stop in Portage la Prairie at the Fort la Reine Museum on Wednesday.

16 vehicles were on display from about 11 a.m. until 3 p.m.

Executive director for the museum, Madison Connolly says everything fell together.

“We weren’t initially going to do anything for Canada Day,” says Connolly. “We weren’t sure about COVID-19 and guidelines, but we do know that we have a great facility for social distancing. We also knew that the community was really desperate for something to do with their families and this was just a really great way to invite people out to the museum.”

There was a steady stream of people visiting the museum to check out the cars, but also to look around at what the museum has to offer. Connolly says it was a big success.

“We had a lot of guidelines in place to make sure that everyone felt safe and had fun here,” says Connolly. “We had a max of 100 people, as is the provincial guidelines for COVID-19 gatherings. Throughout the entire day, we had almost 100 people. Either twenty people left and twenty people just happened to show up at the same time. It worked out really well.”

If more people had shown up, the museum was prepared. Connolly says they had social distancing markers set up at the entrance, while also having an alternate route for people leaving the event. After it was all said and done, Connolly hopes this can be a regular occurrence at the museum.

“We’re hoping that we can do something similar next year,” says Connolly. “Just because it was COVID-19 this year, things looked a little different, but we’re really happy to have these feature days. I was really hesitant to call this an event. We really didn’t want too, too many people coming and people being upset that they have to wait. It actually was just the perfect amount of people. I believe we’ve had about 200 to 250 people.”
